Friday, May 21, 2004 ANTI FREEZE WARNING Please read and warn others of this fatal poison Every year, an estimated 10,000 cats and dogs are needlessly poisoned by ingesting antifreeze. Many engine coolants and antifreezes contain ethylene glycol (EG), an extremely toxic chemical. Unfortunately, EG has a sweet taste and smell that attracts animals. Much love, always Davina [Posted by: Davina at 6:46 am] Saturday, May 15, 2004 URGENT PLEA FOR PUNISHED PAWS Dear Friends, This is a plea for help, for a very special woman, who I admire greatly for her selflessness and devotion to the plight of abused and homeless animals. Heila Hitchcock is based in Cape Town and fights the endless struggle of rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing other people’s unwanted animals. In her care, at the moment, she has dozens of cats and dogs. All of which she feeds, loves and devotes her time too. The bills, including veterinary costs, food and kennelling are mounting up and she can not cope on her own anymore. I know most people just struggle with everyday living, car payments and maybe, if we are lucky, a yearly vacation. Can you imagine the costs involved with all theses added burdens. Heila walks where most fear to tread, Heila cleans up what human greed neglects and mistreats, she is the brave one, who does what needs to be done, however endless, thankless and heart breaking the job is. .She is awaiting an NPO number from Pretoria for money donations and I will update with post with account details as soon as one has been received What she urgently needs is dog and cat food and money for spay/neutering and vaccinations. All the animals which are rescued are either in foster homes or in the kennels. Heila has to provide the food for all of them as all the foster parents are poor, but great animal loving people. The kennel owner is a kind, understanding woman and has agreed to home the animals at a nominal fee as long as Heila provides food for the animals. If anyone can help with re-homing the animals or donations, she can carry on the wonderful work which she is doing. Please contact her at info@pawtal.za.net You can also see her website at http://www.pawtal.co.za and the adoption page is http://www.paws.za.net/adopt/default.asp [Posted by: Davina at 9:34 pm] Thursday, May 13, 2004 Dear Animal Welfare organization, I represent a group of South African IT professionals with a deep concern for animal welfare in our country. We would like to assist in the work that is done by animal welfare centers such as yours in the way we are most able – by developing an IT infrastructure to assist you in your jobs. We are currently polling the relevant animal welfare concerns and invite you to be a part of the process of determining what functionality should be built into the system. The results of this project will be provided free to any animal welfare centre, so it would be to your advantage, if you are interested, to be involved and help to shape the project to suit your needs. What we currently envision is a website that will allow you free access to a range of tools that will assist you in publicity, fund raising, educating the public and curtailing the horrific statistics of animal abuse and neglect in South Africa today. We have assembled one of the finest development teams this country has to offer, the latest and greatest software directly from Microsoft, and are excited to start moving forward with this venture. If you are interested in this opportunity and would like to give input, thereby reaping its many potential rewards, please contact me via email or telephone, so we can discuss your requirements. Yours faithfully for the love of animals Davina Hall-Green Cell: 082 549 5177 E-Mail: davinahg@magicmail.co.za [Posted by: Davina at 9:47 pm] Monday, May 10, 2004 Pets "In a perfect world, animals would be free to live their lives to the fullest: raising their young, enjoying their native environments, and following their natural instincts. However, domesticated dogs and cats cannot survive "free" in our concrete jungles, so we must take as good care of them as possible. People with the time, money, love, and patience to make a lifetime commitment to an animal can make an enormous difference by adopting from shelters or rescuing animals from a perilous life on the street. But it is also important to stop manufacturing "pets," thereby perpetuating a class of animals forced to rely on humans to survive." -PETA pamphlet, Companion Animals: Pets or Prisoners? "I dont use the word "pet." I think its speciesist language. I prefer "companion animal." For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship – enjoyment at a distance." -Ingrid Newkirk, PETA vice-president, quoted in The Harper's Forum Book, Jack Hitt, ed., 1989, p.223 [Posted by: Davina at 7:23 am] |
